How to get the smoky eye Taraji P. Henson rocked at the Emmys
Just like her character Cookie Lyon on Fox’s hit show “Empire,” Taraji P. Henson turned heads at the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards in her custom Alexander Wang gown with chain shoulder straps (think more Home Depot than Chanel).
Henson’s makeup, particularly her sultry smoky eyes, accentuated the edgy nature of her long, black dress.
“Alexander Wang created an edgy princess gown for an edgy rock star actress,” says Henson’s longtime makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff, who used L’Oréal Paris. “The dress called for smoky eyes with lots of liner and sexy lashes.”

Sheriff started the smoldering eye look with L’Oréal Paris Silkissime Eyeliner by Infallible in black on the lids and lash line. She blended the pencil out onto the lid and then using her finger tips, blended L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Smoldering Plum liberally all over the lids. Sheriff layered darker mahogany and cocoa colors from L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche La Palette Nude up to the crease and accented along the lower lash line.
Finally, she primed and coated the upper and lower lashes with Voluminous Superstar Mascara and then finished by tracing L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Superstar Liner into a thin, but bold, cat-wing that gave the look a slightly mod feel.
To set the look for the long, hot evening, Sheriff sprayed L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Spray & Set Makeup Extender Setting Spray all over Henson’s face.
