Jane Lynch was all in after reading script for CBS’ ‘Angel From Hell’

Jane Lynch does not play a typical guardian angel on CBS’ upcoming comedy “Angel From Hell.”

In fact, her character, Amy, is actually “drunk, possibly high, maybe smells a little homeless,” said Tad Quill, the show’s creator and executive producer. But she also claims to be the guardian angel of Allison (Maggie Lawson).

“The idea for the show came about because I was thinking about the ‘Bewitched’ supernatural element [and] what would be the updated version of that show today,” Quill said at the Television Critics Assn. summer press tour in Beverly Hills on Monday. “What would it be like if a guardian angel actually came into your life. ... You would probably think that person was crazy. But a small part of you would hope that was true, because who wouldn’t want a guardian angel?”

Viewers, like Allison on the show, will also wonder whether Lynch is what she claims to be.

“Is she actually a guardian or is she nuts?” Quill said. “There will be evidence for both.”

Lynch said she was drawn to the show immediately after reading the script.

“I loved it the minute I read it and called my agent and said let’s get the ball rolling,” she said. “I think the writing is great. ... I love who Amy is and what a mess she is.”

Lynch said she also enjoyed reuniting with Lawson, whom she worked with on USA Network’s “Psych.”

“When I got to CBS for our first reading together, Jane was already there. ... I went into the ladies restroom and she was there singing at the top of her lungs. It was perfect. We ended up singing together.”

Song of choice: “The Music and the Mirror” from the musical “A Chorus Line.”

“I always sing in the bathroom. I think a lot of people already do,” Lynch added. “All the acoustics ... are awesome.”

The two also said they both believe in guardian angels and said they can come in any form, including animals.

The CBS show premieres Nov. 5.
