Steven Moffat says ‘Sherlock’ stars want another season

The third season of the beloved contemporary revamp of “Sherlock” doesn’t have an air date yet, but the show’s creator, Steven Moffat, is telling the press that his very in-demand stars, Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch, are all aboard for a fourth season. That is, if the BBC orders one.

“We had to inform the BBC that Martin and Benedict had commissioned a new series,” Moffat told the British publication Radio Times. “They signed themselves up. They both announced that they were carrying on -- so that’s good.”

The fact that both actors are still up for more “Sherlock” is a good sign for fans, since the actors’ film careers are incredibly busy. In fact, filming for the show’s third season had been delayed in order to accommodate the schedules of Freeman and Cumberbatch.

The most recent episode of “Sherlock,” titled “The Reichenbach Fall,” first aired in May of 2012 and ended on a cliffhanger, leaving fans wondering about the fate of their favorite British detective for over a year and a half. It’s no question that he survived, but it’s the how that is leaving fans scratching their heads.

Freeman and Cumberbatch both appear in the remaining two “Hobbit” films, though Cumberbatch is voice only.

As for the third season, Moffat himself didn’t know for sure when it would air, but thought it would be at the very end or very beginning of the year.
