‘Seinfeld” reunion? Jerry Seinfeld talks ‘secret project’ in interview

Could a “Seinfeld” reunion really be in the works?

Well, it isn’t not in the works, Jerry Seinfeld said Thursday in a giant tease of an interview with New York’s WFAN radio station.

Appearing on “Boomer & Carton,” Seinfeld was asked about a photo taken on Jan. 13 of the comedian and his former “Seinfeld” co-star, Jason Alexander, standing outside Tom’s Restaurant in New York’s Upper West Side. As “Seinfeld” fans are well aware, the exterior of Tom’s was used in establishing shots of the fictional Monk’s Diner, Jerry and the gang’s favorite greasy spoon.

Understandably, the photo fueled speculation about what they were up to. Some thought they might be collaborating on a Super Bowl commercial; others theorized Seinfeld and Alexander were filming an episode of Seinfeld’s popular Web series, “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.”

“It’s neither,” Seinfeld explained, “But it is not not those things either. It’s a secret project.”

Well, that sure clarifies things, doesn’t it?

Not surprisingly, the hosts weren’t satisfied with Seinfeld’s riddle-like answer and pressed him for more details, playing a kind of showbiz version of “20 Questions.”

Here’s what the funny man reluctantly revealed:

• Other “Seinfeld” cast members will be involved in the “secret project.” (A quick scan of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ usually active Twitter account reveals a deafening silence for two days right around the picture was taken on Jan. 13.)
• It is filmed.
• It is longer than 60 seconds but still “short-ish.”
• Jason Alexander is starring as George, not himself.
• “Seinfeld” co-creator Larry David is involved but will not be appearing on camera.
• The project was filmed at locations other than Tom’s Restaurant.
• It will be a “one and done” thing, sadly.
• The project will be revealed “very, very soon.”

So what could it all mean? Our money’s still on the Super Bowl. Whatever the case may be, it sounds like Seinfeld hasn’t lost his sense of humor. When asked if Alexander was surprised to get the call to play George, he quipped, “No, he remembers that he played that character for nine years.”
