First ‘Lemony Snicket’ trailer has all the Neil Patrick Harris you could want... and more
Netflix released the first full trailer for its upcoming series “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” Thursday morning, giving fans their first real look at what’s to come.
Based on the series of children’s novels by Daniel Handler, whose pen name character of Lemony Snicket is the narrator of the books, Netflix’s new series centers around the newly orphaned Baudelaire children and their mysterious, nefarious relative Count Olaf, played by Neil Patrick Harris.
For the uninitiated, this is the second adaptation of the book series. With Jim Carrey as Count Olaf, the 2004 film was a moderate success, but a sequel fell through because the children who originated the roles were soon too old to revisit the series.
The trailer for the television series offers a fascinating look at what is clearly a complicated universe with visuals that look like a cross between “The Addams Family” films and ABC’s cult hit “Pushing Daisies.” Then again, that makes sense: “Unfortunate Events” director Barry Sonnenfeld also helmed those projects.
As dark as the trailer is, there’s also plenty of tomfoolery courtesy of Harris, who revels in Count Olaf’s many disguises and plays up his comedic chops.
“A Series of Unfortunate Events” premieres Jan. 13, 2017, on Netflix.
