HBO’s John Oliver on regifting is the gift that keeps on giving
Despite being mired in a break that means it’s always winter and never Christmas, John Oliver and the team at HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” published a video on Sunday to help ease people through the trying holiday season.
In it, Oliver tackles the serious business of holiday regifting, giving the audience salient tips on how best to pull off the process of dumping an unwanted gift on an unsuspecting acquaintance.
Oliver identifies some of the bland, impersonal gifts that may necessitate regifting, paying particular attention to scented candles (“Just a candle that’s extra desperate for attention.”) and Edible Arrangements (“I don’t know you very well, but, if you’re anything like me, you have to eat or else you’ll die.”)
He even goes so far as to give the audience tips on how best to disguise their gift-giving subterfuge, advising on investing in a new wrap job or, at the very least, throwing a gift bag, the “sweatpants of gift-wrapping” on the item.
You can see the whole of the video here, though be advised there is a bit of Oliver’s cheeky language throughout.
The surprise video from the team at “Last Week Tonight” comes as a welcome surprise, because their last new episode aired on Nov. 22, just over three weeks ago. The late-night talk and news satire is scheduled to return with new episodes in February.
