‘Downton Abbey,’ ‘Transparent,’ ‘The Knick’ score big in DGA Award nominations

“Downton Abbey” and “Transparent” may need to clear off some more space in their trophy cases. Both are among the shows nominated for top awards from the Directors Guild of America.

The DGA, the main trade group for film and television directors, announced its annual nominations for directing in TV, commercials and documentaries on Wednesday.

For dramatic series, the nominees are Michael Engler for “Downton Abbey,” Lesli Linka Glatter for “Homeland,” David Nutter for “Game of Thrones,” Steven Soderbergh for “The Knick” and Matthew Weiner for “Mad Men.”

In comedies, the list consists of Chris Addison (“Veep”), Louis C.K. (“Louie”), Mike Judge (“Silicon Valley”), Gail Mancuso (“Modern Family”) and Jill Soloway (“Transparent”). Soloway won the Emmy for directing last year.

Interestingly, the comedy list doesn’t include “Mozart in the Jungle,” the Amazon comedy that surprised many with multiple wins at Sunday’s Golden Globes.

Several actors crossing over into directing got DGA nominations. Angela Bassett was nominated in the movie/miniseries category for Lifetime’s “Whitney.” Chris Rock got a nod for HBO’s “Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo.”

Elsewhere, Sofia Coppola was nominated for the Netflix special “A Very Murray Christmas.”

The full list of nominees is posted online. The DGA Awards will be presented Feb. 6.
