BBC America renews ‘The Musketeers’ ahead of premiere

BBC America is so enthused about its upcoming Three Musketeers series titled “The Musketeers” that it renewed the series for a second season before the first episodes have aired in the U.S.

The co-production between BBC America and BBC Worldwide will premiere its first 10-episode season on BBC America on June 22.

The setting is identical to Alexandre Dumas’ 1844 classic novel, 17th century Paris, but this series is promising a fresh take on the adventures of Athos (Tom Burke), Porthos (Howard Charles), Aramis (Santiago Cabrera) and D’Artagnan (Luke Pasqualino), all personal bodyguards to King Louis XIII.

The series was created by Adrian Hodges, who co-created the BBC dinosaur series “Primeval.”

The first season has already aired in England and though the second season is set for 2015, one major character, the villianous Cardinal Richelieu, will have to be recast. Peter Capaldi played the cardinal in the first season, but it was during filming that he learned he’d landed the role of Doctor Who to replace Matt Smith.
