Is it election day yet? Lena Dunham, Martin Sheen among the latest to appear in political spots
Election day is now less than a week away, and the celebrity-tilted political ads keep cropping up on social media.
Writer and “Girls” creator Lena Dunham, a longtime Hillary Clinton supporter, appeared in a new Funny or Die video released Thursday that brings her together with another longtime pop cultural lightning rod: hip-hop. Though made with a heaping dollop of winking self-awareness (in the clip Dunham refers to her efforts as “rapped music”), “Sensual Pantsuit Anthem” is serious about its Clinton advocacy with its stark red and blue hues and, of course, Dunham rapping in a pantsuit — which she eventually takes off.
Sound like a bad idea? Radio personality Charlamagne Tha God shows up and agrees (“The rap is trash, and why are you wearing Hillary’s lingerie?”), along with, so far, much of the Funny or Die audience, which is not rating the clip very highly online. You can watch the clip here, though be advised there’s some NSFW language.
More serious is the latest clip from Joss Whedon’s Save the Day campaign, which continues to release short videos advocating voter participation. The latest opts for an understated approach with a stand-up by Martin Sheen — best known to TV fans as President Bartlet on “The West Wing” — disputing the notion that one vote doesn’t really count.
The stark simplicity of the video stands in contrast with a clip released two days ago, which features Alan Tudyk and “Star Trek” star Chris Pine, who flexes some impressive comedic chops. Pine portrays a new employee at a company who childishly refuses to do his job in a short that takes a few shots at Congress while also advocating for voter empowerment. With Pine teetering on the edge of mania as the clip goes on, there’s some solid laughs here no matter where you land on the political spectrum.

Mercifully, there are only five more days until this election season is over. Will we make it? If the Cubs can win the World Series, anything is possible.
