‘Flashdance’ Broadway debut delayed -- again

“Flashdance” fanatics will have to wait once more. Producers announced Tuesday that the stage version, based on the 1983 film about a welder who just wants to dance, has again pushed its Broadway debut.

The $12-million show, which kicked off a national tour in January, had been scheduled to open in New York in August but now will premiere later in the 2013-14 season. It once had been planned for a fall 2012 debut.

“Broadway is and has always been a tough place for new shows to succeed, and we want to get this right,” Thomas Vierte, one of the musical’s producers, told the New York Times. Vierte added that the creative team will remain intact.

Viertel’s producing partners — Marc Routh, Richard Frankel and Steven Baruch — were behind such screen-to-stage adaptations as “Hairspray” and “Leap of Faith.”

So far the touring show has received mixed reviews, with some critics saying that, like the hit film, it features a strong score but could use some alterations elsewhere in the production.

The tour stars Emily Padgett as Alex and features songs from the film’s Grammy-winning soundtrack as well as 16 new tracks. It makes its way to Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa May 7.
