Prince backing band the Revolution will reunite

Even in death, Prince’s revolution is far from over.

Five members of the singer’s onetime backing band the Revolution have announced that they’ll be reforming in the wake of their leader’s unexpected death.

Guitarist Wendy Melvoin said in a video statement that, after seeing the outpouring of affection and remembrances of Prince and his music over the last few days, they owed it to him to continue playing.

“We have decided after spending three or four days together now grieving over the loss of Prince that we would like to come out and do some shows,” she said.

The Revolution, which featured Melvoin and keyboardist Lisa Coleman of the duo Wendy and Lisa, backed Prince during his “Purple Rain” heyday in the early ‘80s, and became some of his most high-profile collaborators.

No dates or venues have been confirmed yet. But his peers -- including old bandmates -- are finding ways to memorialize his unmatched talent. The film “Purple Rain” will also be making a return appearance to more than 200 AMC theaters this weekend, and artists from Bruce Springsteen to D’Angelo to a good swath of Coachella have all covered Prince in tribute.
