Phoenix releases new song, ‘Entertainment,’ from upcoming album

The year of Phoenix has begun.

After announcing last week that it would release a new album in April, the French band on Monday posted the disc’s first song, “Entertainment,” on YouTube. It’s a speedy electro-rock jam built around the group’s signature live-disco guitar, as well as a giant-sized synth hook that after a few spins is reminding Pop & Hiss of some of the rave-ier moments from Coldplay’s “Mylo Xyloto.” (Listen to “Entertainment” below.)

Due out in the U.S. on April 23, “Bankrupt!” will serve as the highly anticipated follow-up to 2009’s “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix,” which won the Grammy Award for alternative music album and spawned the semi-hit singles “Lisztomania” and “1901.” Phoenix co-produced the new album with Philippe Zdar, who also oversaw “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.”

Song titles on the 10-track set include “Trying to Be Cool,” “Drakkar Noir” and the especially promising “S.O.S. in Bel Air.”

Phoenix is to launch a world tour in Vancouver next month, not long before the band is set to arrive in Southern California for a headlining performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. It’s scheduled to take the big stage in Indio on April 13 and April 20.
