Justin Timberlake album to sell 1 million copies in a week?

He’s already hit the top spot in the United Kingdom, where “The 20/20 Experience” entered the album chart Sunday at No. 1 -- and in the process became the fastest-selling disc of the year so far there.

Now Justin Timberlake is almost certain to repeat the feat in the United States when Billboard reveals its new charts on Wednesday, reflecting U.S. sales through Sunday night.

But can the pop superstar sell 1 million records in a week?

Writing Sunday in Billboard, Keith Caulfield said music-industry sources were estimating that first-week sales of “The 20/20 Experience” will wind up between 950,000 and 975,000. “But,” he added, “it would seem that the album has a quite real shot at reaching the magic million mark.”

Taylor Swift pulled it off late last year with “Red,” and Lady Gaga did it in 2011 with “Born This Way.” The single-week sales record is currently held by Timberlake’s old band ‘NSync, which moved 2.4 million copies of “No Strings Attached” in 2000, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

In an album-release special aired last week on the CW, Timberlake confirmed rumors that “The 20/20 Experience” is the first installment of a planned two-part project. Details for the second set have yet to be announced.
