Organizers of the annual John Lennon remembrance in Hollywood, slated for Tuesday at Lennon’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star outside Capitol Records as usual, are using this year’s event to address gun violence.

Dec. 8 marks the 35th anniversary of Lennon’s death after being shot in New York City in 1980 by a man who claimed to be a fan.

The featured speaker is scheduled to be Suzanne Verge, president of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, and plans for the evening include a moment of silence to honor the 14 people who died last week in the mass shooting in San Bernardino.

Fans will be placing flowers on Lennon’s star in memory of the slain former Beatles singer and songwriter, and performers will sing his songs during an open-mike segment of the ceremony.

Remembrance organizer and veteran peace activist Jerry Rubin said the event “is not meant as a time for mourning, but more as a time to celebrate John Lennon’s life, music and timely ‘Give Peace a Chance’ message.”

The ceremony is scheduled to run from 6 to 8 p.m. at 1750 N. Vine St., Hollywood. More information is available at the Lennon memorial Facebook page or by calling (310) 399-1000.
