Watch Bonnie McKee’s cameo-filled ‘American Girl’ video
It shares its title with a Tom Petty song and its bouncy electro-pop groove with any number of hits by Katy Perry. But with “American Girl,” Bonnie McKee is owning a tune as she never has before.
It’s the first single from an upcoming debut album by the L.A.-based songwriter, who in recent years has helped pen huge songs for Britney Spears (“Hold It Against Me”), Taio Cruz (“Dynamite”) and Perry (“Teenage Dream,” “California Gurls”), among others.
Fans of any of those singles will probably take quickly to “American Girl,” in which McKee runs down the various aspects of her American-ness -- her blood runs hot, she wants to take over the world, she was “raised by a television” -- over the kind of candied synth licks that seem required for play on Top 40 radio. (There’s some sweet slap bass, too.)

But just in case the song doesn’t grab you straightaway, there’s a music video, too, featuring many, many of McKee’s A-list pals lip-syncing to her song.
The cast is truly impressive: Kesha (yay!), Macklemore (boo!), Adam Lambert (excellent!), Jewel (wait, what?). And the clip contains cameos by both Cruz and Jason Derulo, which is notable in that it moves Pop & Hiss slightly closer to believing the two aren’t the same man.
