Greek, Gibson 2013 concert schedules unveiled
Los Lobos, Carly Rae Jepsen, a symphonic tribute to Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia, Diana Krall and a complete performance of English prog-rock band Jethro Tull’s “Thick as a Brick” Parts 1 and 2 by the band’s frontman Ian Anderson highlight the Greek Theatre’s 2013 season, venue officials announced today.
Meanwhile at the Gibson Amphitheatre, an Alice Cooper-Marilyn Manson shock-rock double bill, Gloria Trevi, Ramon Ayala, Il Volo, Lila Downs, Pepe Aguilar and the Brian Setzer Orchestra top the new season’s offerings, all of which become available March 8 to members of the amphitheaters’ joint subscription program, the Premiere Marquee Club (PMC).
Los Lobos will be joined by Kinky and El Chicano for the band’s second Cinco de Mayo Festival to kick off the Greek’s extended-summer season, which runs at least until Oct. 27. Other offerings include Jepsen’s date on Sept. 15, “An Evening With the Tenors” (June 1), “A Prairie Home Companion” with Garrison Keillor (June 7), Cyndi Lauper’s 30th anniversary She’s So Unusual Tour (June 13), Barry Manilow’s “Manilow on Broadway” (June 14-16), the Steve Miller Band and the Doobie Brothers (June 20) and a ‘90s-tilted rock bill with Barenaked Ladies, Ben Folds Five and Guster (June 23).
The Greek has several other multi-act bills on tap, including ‘90s hitmakers Guy, Tony! Toni! Tone!, Dru Hill, SWB and Al B. Sure on July 5; Sugar Ray, Smash Mouth, Gin Blossoms, Vertical Horizon and Fastball (July 13); a vintage R&B; night including the Stylistics, Brenton Wood, Peaches and Herb and others (July 14) and an ‘80s techno-pop show with Andy Bell’s Erasure, Human League, Howard Jones and Information Society (Aug. 30).
The Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration will be played by Warren Haynes and a full orchestra on Aug. 4. And, in a turnabout after last year’s Beach Boys 50th anniversary reunion tour (when founding member Mike Love announced he would resume performing under the Beach Boys name without creative leader Brian Wilson or singer-guitarist Jardine and guitarist Marks), those three will appear together on Oct. 20 with the backing of the Brian Wilson Band. Ian Anderson’s Tull show is slated for July 6.
The Cooper-Manson bill will play the Gibson on June 6, followed by Trevi on June 15, Ayala (July 27), the Teen Choice Awards (Aug. 11), Marco Antonio Solis (Aug. 16), Il Volo (Aug. 28), Lila Downs (Sept. 20), Eros Ramazzotti (Oct. 17), Aguilar (Nov. 8), a country festival with Montgomery Gentry and the Charlie Daniels Band (Dec. 12) and Setzer and his orchestra’s annual holiday show “Christmas Rocks,” marking its 10th anniversary (Dec. 21).
