Daft Punk reportedly will release new record soon

Some musicians feel compelled to tweet their every career move, costume change, marital mishap and stray thought to their adoring masses.

Then there’s Daft Punk. The enigmatic, cyborg-helmeted French electronica duo knows the value of obscurity and in keeping your fans guessing about your personal lives, not to mention your artistic intentions. If nothing else, it’s a savvy public relations strategy.

Consequently, in the last few hours, the blogosphere has been lighting up with news that Daft Punk has signed a new contract with Columbia Records and has plans to release a new disc as early as this spring.

If the reports are correct, it would be Daft Punk’s first album release since 2005’s “Human After All,” other than live recordings, sound tracks (Disney’s “Tron: Legacy”) and the like.

Predictably, the list of possible collaborators on the new record is long, including Nile Rodgers and disco-synth pioneer Giorgio Moroder, but no names have been confirmed so far. Chic frontman Rodgers earlier hinted at a long-rumored Daft Punk collaboration on his site and promised that fans would hear something soon.

A tour this year also may be unlikely, after rumors were squashed that Daft Punk would materialize at this spring’s Coachella Music and Arts Festival.
