‘Fault in Our Stars’ trailer glimpses new Shailene Woodley romance

The new Shailene Woodley film “The Fault in Our Stars” unveiled its first trailer Wednesday, and it promises to be a tearjerker of a romance.

Adapted from the bestselling young-adult novel by John Green, the movie stars Woodley as Hazel Grace Lancaster and Ansel Elgort as Augustus “Gus” Waters, two teenage cancer patients who meet cute and fall in love -- in spite of Hazel’s reluctance, the trailer suggests.

In the trailer, which you can watch above, Hazel warns in voice-over that her story won’t be sugarcoated. “I like that version as much as the next girl does, it’s just not the truth,” she says. The spot does have its fair share of sweet moments -- “Why are you staring at me?” she asks; “Because you’re beautiful,” he replies -- but it doesn’t shy away from the characters’ illness either, with Hazel sporting an ever-present breathing tube, for example.

The film, which Fox plans to open June 6, is directed by Josh Boone (“Stuck in Love”); Michael H. Weber and Scott Neustadter wrote the adaptation. Nat Wolff, Laura Dern and Willem Dafoe also star.

Woodley, who got her start on the ABC Family series “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” and earned strong notices for her roles in “The Descendants” and “The Spectacular Now,” is poised for a big year between “The Fault in Our Stars” and “Divergent,” an adaptation of the Veronica Roth book about a dystopian future where society is divided into factions based on personality traits; that movie is set to hit theaters March 21.

Woodley plays the lead role in the latter film as well, which aims to hit “The Hunger Games” audience -- it falls into a similar genre, is being released by the same studio and comes on the same date as the first Katniss film.

And the actress isn’t the only one to do a “Divergent”-”Fault” double-dip -- “Fault” star Elgort also appears in “Divergent,” playing Woodley’s character’s brother.
