Sage Shailene: ‘Divergent’ star Woodley offers life advice (Part 1)
Meet Shailene Woodley: former child model, breakout TV actress, star of two highly anticipated young-adult movie adaptations and ... life guru?
As the 22-year-old California native makes the rounds on red carpets, talk shows and magazine covers promoting her upcoming films “Divergent” and “The Fault in Our Stars,” Woodley has proved to be refreshingly quirky and outspoken. One of her favorite topics of discussion seems to be her crunchy, neo-hippie approach to wellness, decorum and life in general.
With that in mind, we culled some of the best bits of Woodley’s wisdom. Here is the first installment in a series of posts sharing some of her thoughts on various topics.

On food shopping:
“I think everything about my lifestyle is fairly alternative,” Woodley told Flaunt last year. “I gather my own spring water from mountains every month. I go to a farm to get my food. I make everything from my own toothpaste to my own body lotions and face oils.”
She continues: “I could go on for hours. I make my own medicines; I don’t get those from doctors. I make my own cheese and forage wild foods and identify wild plants. It’s an entire lifestyle. It’s appealing to my soul.”
On cultural investigation:
Sure, farm-fresh food is good, and so is homemade toothpaste. But let us not forget about the wonders of ... clay. It’s “one of the best things you can put in your body,” Woodley says.
The actress recently told Into the Gloss, “I first heard about the benefits of eating clay from a taxi driver. He was African and was saying that, where he’s from, the women eat clay when they’re pregnant. Seriously -- ask your taxi drivers where they are from and about their customs. You will learn a lot. So, I’ve discovered that clay is great for you because your body doesn’t absorb it, and it apparently provides a negative charge, so it bonds to negative isotopes. And, this is crazy: it also helps clean heavy metals out of your body.”

On tanning:
Woodley also told Into the Gloss that it’s best to get sunshine where, well, the sun don’t shine.
“I was reading an article written by an herbalist I studied about yeast infections and other genital issues. She said there’s nothing better than vitamin D.”
Feeling sluggish? Woodley has the solution: “If you’re feeling depleted, go in the sun for an hour and see how much energy you get. Or, if you live in a place that has heavy winters, when the sun finally comes out, spread your legs and get some sunshine.”
