Screen Actors Guild Awards 2016: ‘Spotlight’ vs. ‘The Big Short’
Though they both were shut out of any Golden Globe wins three weeks ago, “The Big Short” and “Spotlight” have gained momentum in the race for Oscar gold. Last week, “The Big Short” won the the Producers Guild Award, one of the bellwethers for the top Academy Award. And tonight “Spotlight” won the Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance by a cast, the guild’s equivalent of the best picture Oscar.
So how have these two fared during awards season? Here’s a look at the top honors they have won and the awards for which they are still competing.
“The Big Short”
Academy Award nominations: Five including film, supporting actor, director and adapted screenplay
BAFTA nominations: Five including film, director, screenplay and supporting actor
Directors Guild of America Award: Adam McKay is nominated for director
Los Angeles Film Critics Assn.: Won for editing
National Board of Review: Won for ensemble
Producers Guild Award: Won Darryl F. Zanuck Producers of the Year
“Spotlight”
Academy Award nominations: Six including film, director, screenplay, supporting actor and actress

Directors Guild Awards: Tom McCarthy is nominated for director
Gotham Awards: Won for film, screenplay and a special jury prize for ensemble
Film Independent Spirit Awards: Won Robert Altman Award, nominated for four awards including film, director and screenplay
Los Angeles Film Critics Assn.: Won for film and screenplay
New York Film Critics Circle: Michael Keaton won for lead actor
National Board of Review: One of the top 10 films of the year
National Society of Film Critics: Won for film and screenplay
