Oscars 2014: Was Wednesday the busiest day of TV campaigning ever?

Like politicians on a whistle-stop tour before a big election, this year’s Academy Award nominees have flocked to TV talk shows in recent weeks. But no day may have seen as much of that flocking as Wednesday, when everywhere one looked — morning, afternoon and night — there was an Oscar nominee or three.

Here’s a rundown:

—Leonardo DiCaprio got an early start, appearing on “CBS This Morning” to talk about his portrayal of shady stockbroker Jordan Belfort in Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street,” which earned him a nomination for best actor.

—DiCaprio’s “The Wolf of Wall Street” co-star Jonah Hill followed with an afternoon appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” Hill garnered his second nomination for playing Belfort’s partner in crime, Donnie Azoff. (Both “Wolf” nominees are seen as dark horses, though not without an outside chance, against favorites “Dallas Buyers Club” stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto.)

—Hill’s stiff competition might explain why he doubled up on TV appearances Wednesday. In a segment that aired on “The Tonight Show,” Hill teamed with new host Jimmy Fallon to reprise his popular “hashtag game” skit, in which the two blatantly overused social-media jargon while making silly hand gestures. Even Scorsese himself — an Oscar nominee for best director — got in on the act, appearing in a brief cameo.

—On the same “Tonight Show” episode, Fallon welcomed “American Hustle” star Bradley Cooper as a guest. Cooper is also nominated for best supporting actor for his performance as the loose-cannon FBI agent Richie DiMaso. Continuing Fallon’s M.O. of getting celebrities to join in his stunts, Cooper joined Fallon, musical guest Tim McGraw and surprise guest Emma Thompson for a game of charades.

—Cooper got some moral support from his “American Hustle” director, David O. Russell, who was spotted in the “Tonight Show” audience. Russell, another Oscar nominee for best director, was pounding the pavement in his native New York; he also appeared as a guest on Wednesday’s episode of “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart.

—Stewart’s Comedy Central compatriot, Stephen Colbert, also hosted a director vying for a statue: Alexander Payne, who is nominated for helming father-son road drama “Nebraska.” And back on the West Coast, one of Payne’s stars, June Squibb, stopped by “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” Squibb is nominated for best supporting actress for her role as a sharp-tongued elderly wife and mother.

—Also appearing on Kimmel’s show was McConaughey, who has already claimed a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe for his performance as the real-life Texas electrician, AIDs patient and unlikely activist in “Dallas Buyers Club.”

—Not to be outdone, Lupita Nyong’o, an Oscar nominee for best supporting actress for her role as a tormented young woman in the historical drama “12 Years a Slave,” stopped by “The Late Show With David Letterman.”

Just what effect all this last-minute awards campaigning has on voting is impossible to say. It sure does keep bookers busy and couches filled, though.
