Motion picture academy guarantees five Oscar song nominees

The Academy Awards will have more to sing about at next year’s Oscars. The Board of Governors approved new rules on Thursday that will guarantee five nominees in the original song category -- a number the show hasn’t seen since the 2009 ceremony.

At the 84thOscar ceremony earlier this year, there were just two nominees – the winning “Man or Muppet” from “The Muppets” with music and lyrics by Bret McKenzie, and “Real in Rio” from the animated “Rio,” with music by Sergio Mendes and Carlinhos Brown and lyricsby Siedah Garret. Many fans and Oscar watchers alike felt so few nominees robbed the show of some excitement -- and variety.

The board’s announcement states that during the nomination process all voting members of the music branch will receive a reminder list of works submitted in the category and a DVD of the song clips. Members will then vote -- in the order of preference -- for their top five picks. The five with the most votes will become the nominees.
