Julian Assange’s ‘Fifth Estate’ trailer debuts
We’ve seen the Julian Assange documentary.
Now it’s time for the WikiLeaks drama.
The trailer for director Bill Condon’s “The Fifth Estate,” Dreamworks Studios’ fictonalized telling of the story of WikiLeaks founder Assange, debuted Wednesday, ahead of the film’s Oct. 11 premiere.
The film, adapted from the book by and told from the point of view of Assange’s friend Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl), follows the journey of Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his colleagues as the controversial website and its founder become their own media story and WikiLeaks’ popularity sparks a conflict between the two Internet sleuths.
The drama comes on the heels of the critically acclaimed Alex Gibney-directed documentary “We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks.”

As the trailer makes clear, the release of confidential documents and videos is not inherently dramatic.
Condon (“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn”) and screenwriter Josh Singer have tried to ratchet up the action by focusing on the U.S. government’s attempts to silence Assange. “The Fifth Estate” also stars Alicia Vikander, Carice van Houten, Stanley Tucci and Laura Linney.
