German Currents: Festival of German Film opens Friday at Egyptian

German Currents: Festival of German Films kicks off its seventh edition Friday and continues through Oct. 7 at the American Cinematheque’s Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.

Presented by the Goethe Institut Los Angeles and Cinematheque, the festival shines a spotlight on recent German features, documentaries, short films and family fare.

The U.S. premiere of Detlev Buck’s 2012 epic “Measuring the World,” about 19th century mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss and scientist Alexander von Humboldt, opens the festival Friday evening. Composer Enis Rotthoff will be in attendance.

PHOTOS: Hollywood Backlot moments

Saturday’s double bill features Jan Ole Gerster’s “Oh Boy,” which swept the 2013 German Film Awards, and the L.A. premiere of Matt Sweetwood’s “Beerland.” Both directors will appear at the screenings.

A 2012 German version of Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Huck Finn,” directed by Hermine Huntgeburth, screens Sunday afternoon. Another double bill -- Thomas Arslan’s “Gold” and Pia Marais’ “Layla Fourie” -- is on tap for Sunday evening. Rayna Campbell, star of “Layla Fourie,” is scheduled to appear.

The festival concludes Oct. 7 with the U.S. premiere of Tizza Covi & Rainer Frimmel’s “The Shine of the Day” and Markus Imhoof’s award-winning documentary “More Than Honey.”
