‘Crimson Peak’ trailer: Guillermo del Toro’s haunted housewarming

“Jane Eyre” meets jump scare in the new trailer for “Crimson Peak,” Guillermo del Toro’s gothic horror film starring Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain and a very forbidding Victorian mansion.

Set for release Oct. 16, the Universal and Legendary film tells the story of Edith Cushing (Wasikowska), a young woman who is swept off her feet by handsome stranger Thomas Sharpe (Hiddleston, Marvel’s Loki, once again up to no good). Edith soon takes up residence with her new beau and his creepy sister (Chastain) at a manse perched atop a mountain of blood-red clay.

Impressive as the house is, it would seem to have some quirks: Strange sounds echo in the cavernous rooms, the bathwater runs red, and skeletal ghosts pass through floors and walls.

“A house as old as this one becomes in time a living thing,” Thomas says at one point, possibly to Edith. “It starts holding on to things … keeping them alive when they shouldn’t be.” Eek.

Del Toro is well known as a genre expert with a gift for visual flair, having directed such films as “Pan’s Labyrinth,” “Blade II” and “Hellboy,” so “Crimson Peak” finds him on familiar ground. He has likened the film, which he co-wrote with Matthew Robbins, to both a living painting and a Bronte-esque romance.

“I wanted the freedom to tackle a great adult story for a female lead,” Del Toro told Comic-Con last year.

Imagine that — a genre movie for grown-ups, with a woman protagonist to boot. It’s enough to give a person goosebumps.
