Apparently it’s the season of reboots, and following a less than stellar box office year for Sony, the studio is looking to take some gambles. Insert Elizabeth Banks.

The actress-director will helm a revival of the “Charlie’s Angels” franchise. The news was confirmed during Sony’s presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Banks’ profile as a director has catapulted since the commercial success of the girl power a cappella flick “Pitch Perfect 2” -- which grossed over $184 million domestically last year. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, she spoke about the increase in opportunities that have come her way since.

“Well, I get a lot more offers to direct,” she said with a cool-chick laugh in her Brownstone Productions offices on the Universal lot. “I have a whole second career now. I’m constantly excited to have to remind people I also know how to act.

“It’s more that the breadth of work we get to do here at the production company has expanded. There’s more trust now. ... The community’s saying, ‘Oh, they’re really serious about what they’re doing.’

“It helps when your movie makes a lot of money too.”

And making money is obviously what Sony is in the business of doing.

Other sequel announcements in the presentation included “Equalizer 2,” “Bad Boys 3” and a new “Flatliners.” Opening dates and casting choices have not yet been released.
