Review: Gina Rodriguez and gal pals are the real delight in Netflix movie ‘Someone Great’
Netflix’s “Someone Great” is equally suited for a pre-Saturday night or a Sunday morning in sweats. While this debut film from “Sweet/Vicious” creator Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is a raunchy good time, don’t discount its moving message about the lasting power of female friendship.
After nine years together, music journalist Jenny (“Jane the Virgin’s” Gina Rodriguez) is so broken by her breakup with Nate (Lakeith Stanfield) that she’s drinking a bottle of bourbon through a straw. (We’ve all been there.) She’s leaving New York in a week for a job at Rolling Stone in San Francisco, and she’s eager for one last hurrah in the city with best friends Erin (DeWanda Wise) and Blair (Brittany Snow).
Though “Someone Great” is framed by Jenny’s relationship and breakup with Nate, it’s her friendships with Erin and Blair that are the real heart of the film. These supporting characters are given their own lives and loves, and the comedy is a nuanced take on their connection to each other, not just to their romantic partners.
Robinson’s of-the-moment script is a fast-talking wonder, full of both dirty jokes and sweet moments that give its three leads opportunity to shine equally. Amid its sharp jokes about Molly, bodega cats and green juice mimosas (ick), it reveals emotional truths about how we grow not only as individuals but also in our various relationships.
