The Oscar envelope by the numbers
Creative Director Marc Friedland holds the card that is placed inside the famous Oscar envelopes for the Academy Awards show. There are no past versions of the envelopes now, they are created to be iconic, like the statuette.
So what all goes into those 6-by-9-inch card and envelope sets announcing the Oscar winners? Here’s a by-the-numbers look:
2 — Number of people who know all the winners before the broadcast
24 — Number of awards categories
72 — Number of envelopes (three sets for each category)
363 — Nominee cards, three sets for each of the 121 total nominations (most categories have five nominees, with a couple of exceptions)
110 — Man-hours to make each complete envelope
4 — Number of ounces per each sealed envelope
40 — Yards of red satin ribbon used to adorn the red adhesive PricewaterhouseCoopers seal
