Leonard Nimoy fans around the world shared memories and messages all day Friday after learning the actor had died that morning in his Bel-Air home at age 83.

Among the messages circulating were some from the "Star Trek" actor himself about the dangers of smoking and his deep regret for the habit that led to his death.

Nimoy had taken to Twitter after being diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in January 2014 and urged his 1.1 million followers to quit smoking. The man best known as Mr. Spock continued to tweet on a fairly regular basis about the dangers of smoking and congratulated those who told him they had kicked the habit.
