Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla to head City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra

Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla, the rising classical music star who currently serves as assistant conductor at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, had landed a plum job with a major European orchestra.

The Lithuanian conductor has been named the new music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in Britain, leaders are expected to announce Thursday. She will assume her new post in September for an initial three-year period.

Grazinyte-Tyla will succeed Andris Nelsons, who held the position from 2008 to 2015 and who currently leads the Boston Symphony.

Other prominent conductors to head the City of Birmingham Symphony include Simon Rattle and Louis Frémaux.

Her new job doesn’t mean that Grazinyte-Tyla will be bidding farewell to L.A. Last year, she was named associate conductor of the L.A. Phil, a position she will assume starting this summer.

Grazinyte-Tyla is also the music director of the Salzburg Landestheater in Austria. It is common for prominent conductors to hold more than one leadership position with companies throughout the world.

The conductor’s future L.A. appearances include a March 1 concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall leading a program with the L.A. Phil New Music Group.
