‘Suicide Squad’ trailer aims for laughs, and the cast goes for gross
The cast of “Suicide Squad” assembled Sunday on the MTV Movie Awards to present an exclusive clip of the upcoming film. Actors Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto and Cara Delevingne of the villanious comic-book team showed up to tease the much-anticipated picture. And fans at the show couldn’t contain themselves. Watch the clip now!
The new trailer presented quite a different feel and vibe from the reel of footage presented to fans at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Gone was the ultra-serious score, replaced with a rousing, “Guardians of the Galaxy”-type soundtrack, similar to the sneak peek released back in January set to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Clearly, “Suicide Squad” is trying to generate a covetable but very difficult to re-create mix of violence and humor (a.k.a. that lucrative “Deadpool” feeling).
And perhaps this explains why actor Leto decided to share these words with the world. “Sweat, blood and semen ... it’s all in this movie,” Leto told the crowd. “It was the experience of a lifetime and I can’t wait to share it with you crazy ...” Whatever that means, it definitely drums up a very different type of film than the most recent superhero fare from Warner Bros., “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
“The worst superheroes ever,” as Smith described his castmates, is composed of a collection of comic-book baddies given a suicide mission to save the day. If they win, they get their freedom; if they fail, then the world is short a group of nefarious bad guys -- hence the name.
The movie “squad” is made up of Smith (Deadshot), Delevingne (Enchantress), Robbie (Harley Quinn), Leto (The Joker), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) Karen Fukuhara (Katana), Jay Hernandez (El Diablo), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc) and Adam Beach (Slipknot).
Ahead of the reveal, during commercial break, the cast members walked through their movements for the live-action-esque assemblage taking place on the Warner Bros. backlot. At the sight of who was present, fans almost toppled the barricades that held them back. The actors hugged one another on stage. DJ Khaled’s “All I Do Is Win” played and the four of them started dancing. They even got the crowd involved during the song’s chorus.
Gathering all four of the principal cast members together for the reveal was a big deal for the network, according to Garrett English, the show’s executive producer and MTV’s senior vice president of programming, events and live production.
“We knew this was such a big moment for ‘Suicide Squad’ fans that we wanted to literally bring the movie to life in front of the screaming crowd,” he said. “Fire and explosions were the only kind of chaos worthy of megastars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto and Cara Delevingne.”
Warner Bros.’ next big DC action flick has been the source of much recent whispering. After critics panned the “Batman v Superman” movie, rumors swirled that “Suicide Squad” was undergoing reshoots to punch up the humor. Actor Courtney confirmed the reshoots to “Entertainment Tonight,” but refuted the notion that it was to change the tone of the film: “I wouldn’t say we’re going back to make it funnier.”
Only time will tell how the audience responds to “Suicide Squad,” which will premiere Aug. 5.
