First trailer for Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ introduces Benedict Cumberbatch, the magic man

Marvel’s cinematic universe just got a whole lot spookier, and a bit more magical. The world premiere of his new Marvel movie “Doctor Strange” (directed by longtime horror director Scott Derrickson) is loaded with lots of mystical charm with a serious twist.

The footage premiered on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” with plenty of details about the origins of the surgeon-turned-Sorcerer Supreme. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Dr. Stephen Strange, whose eyes are opened to the supernatural world by the power of the Ancient One, played by a bald Tilda Swinton.

Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Dr. Strange first appeared in comics in July 1963, in Strange Tales #110. Strange was a surgeon who lost the use of his hands in a terrible car accident (which is alluded to in this very trailer). Strange travels across the globe looking for a remedy so that he can continue his medical work. Instead, he discovers new mystical arts, along with a passion for martial arts.

Also in the trailer is a glimpse of Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo. Nothing yet was revealed about cast members Rachel McAdams (however it’s worth noting that McAdams is seen in hospital scrubs) and Mads Mikkelsen, who, despite speculation, both seem to have undefined roles.

Many folks suspect this will be Marvel’s spookiest film yet. And the hiring of Derrickson, along with the tenor of this film, only seems to further that belief.

“Doctor Strange” will be released Nov. 4.
