Netflix is remaking ‘Lost in Space’
Netflix has ordered up a 10-episode remake of the 1960s series “Lost in Space” from Legendary TV. But will they keep their silvery space suits and robot?
Announced via press release, writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (“Dracula Untold,” “Gods of Egypt”) join show runner Zack Estrin (“Prison Break”) to reboot the series, which ran from 1965-68, with a release date set for 2018.
The new show will once again center on the Robinson family, space pioneers who are lost in the big black abyss when they’re thrown off their mission.
As for the tone, it sounds like the crew will try and adhere to the original stakes, along with dashes of humor.
“The original series so deftly captured both drama and comedy, and that made it very appealing to a broad audience.” Cindy Holland, Netflix vice president of original content, said in the official press statement. “The current creative team’s reimagining of the series for Netflix is sure to appeal to both fans who fondly remember the original and to create a new generation of enthusiasts around the world.”
This is not the first time Hollywood has tried to revive the Robinsons. But if Netflix wasn’t scared off by William Hurt, Gary Oldman and Matt LeBlanc’s super serious “Lost in Space” movie re-imagining from 1998, a family-centric space drama shouldn’t be too frightening.
