Selena Gomez briefly entered rehab, but not for substance abuse

Selena Gomez spent about two weeks in rehab in January, though the “Come & Get It” singer wasn’t there to be treated for substance abuse, her rep said Wednesday.

“Selena voluntarily spent time at Meadows, but not for substance abuse,” her rep told The Times, declining to comment on why specifically Gomez had entered the facility.

The rehab news was first reported by RadarOnline, which said Wednesday that Gomez had voluntarily checked into rehab Jan. 5 at Dawn at the Meadows, a facility in Arizona that specializes in patients ages 18 through 26 struggling with emotional trauma, addiction and other problems.

In late December, the squeaky-clean starlet canceled February dates on the Australian leg of her “Stars Dance” tour, citing a a need to “spend some time on” herself.

“My fans are so important to me and I would never want to disappoint them,” the 21-year-old said in a statement. “But it has become clear to me and those close to me that after many years of putting my work first, I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be.”

At the time, sources stressed to various outlets that the singer was fine and had just been working “nonstop” for months.

“She is not having a breakdown. She wants to be the healthiest that she can be and this means taking a little break. But she is fine. She is OK,” a source told E! News in December.

Radar told a slightly different story, saying Gomez was “broken-hearted” after her split from Justin Bieber in early 2013 even though he was, according to a source, a “bad influence” on her. Another source alleged she’d been “partying hard” before hitting rehab.

However, yet another source told the website, ““It’s important to remember that Selena had worked in Hollywood nonstop for six years. She was exhausted. Selena was smart enough to understand that she needed to take control of her life.”

Sources told TMZ that the “Wizards of Waverly Place” alum’s decision to go to rehab was “largely based on ‘that crazy boy’” and things she was exposed to when she was around him and his friends.
