Reese Witherspoon arrested for disorderly conduct after husband’s DUI

If not, prepare to be sassed.

That was the lesson one police officer learned late Friday night, as the Oscar-winning actress became agitated after her husband, CAA agent Jim Toth, was arrested for driving under the influence in Atlanta. After he was observed driving a Ford Focus in the wrong lane, Toth was pulled over by cops; Witherspoon was apparently so frustrated with the situation that she began mouthing off to the police and was subsequently arrested for disorderly conduct. The couple was then briefly jailed before being released on bond in the wee hours Saturday morning, said Variety, which broke the news.

As Toth took a sobriety test, Witherspoon — still seated in the vehicle — started to get testy, according to the police report obtained by Variety. When Toth was arrested after blowing a .139 on a Breathalyzer test, the police report said, Witherspoon got out of the car and “stated that she was a ‘U.S. citizen’ and that she was allowed to ‘stand on American ground.’”

Oh, but it gets crazier.

According to the police account, the actress, 37, then asked the police officer, “Do you know my name?” When he said he did not, she replied by telling him, “You’re about to find out who I am.... You are going to be on national news.”

Witherspoon and Toth are in Atlanta shooting the independent film “The Good Lie.” After being released from jail, she flew to New York to attend the premiere of her new film “Mud.” Per the Associated Press, the actress took photographs on the red carpet but did not do interviews with any press.

News of Witherspoon’s behavior is especially surprising given that the actress has always maintained one of the most squeaky-clean reputations in Hollywood. A 2011 Times profile of the star described her this way: “As far as tightly wound actresses go, Reese Witherspoon tops the list. She insists upon a strict sense of order in her life. Her production company is called Type A, a moniker her latest costar, Robert Pattinson, says fits her strong sense of self perfectly.”
