Rebel Wilson sounds off on Kardashians: ‘Superficial,’ careers ‘not really based on talent’
Rebel Wilson is not a member of Team Kardashian.
The “Pitch Perfect 2” star royally bashed the reality-TV family during an Australian radio interview, echoing the barbs that many in and out of the industry have lobbed at the E! personalities over the years: that their rise to superstardom despite apparently minimal talent is puzzling. (Let’s ignore their business savvy and media empire for now.)
The camera-ready clan came up Wednesday while Wilson was appearing on the “Kyle and Jackie O Show.” The Kardashians and their kin have faced a new wave of scathing criticism since Khloe Kardashian’s husband, Lamar Odom, was found unresponsive at a legal brothel in Nevada last month, but that didn’t appear to be what prompted Wilson’s remarks, which were delivered candidly and not as a punchline.
“I got asked to present with Kendall and Kylie [Jenner] at the recent MTV VMAs and I said, ‘No.’ I said I’d do it myself,” the actress said.
“There’s something that ... not that you hate any of them individually, but there’s something that what they stand for is totally against what I stand for,” Wilson continued. “Like they seem a bit superficial, and their careers are not really based on talent. And I know they’re super popular. I’m all about personality and working hard to get to where I am.”
Wilson said presenting together at the Video Music Awards might have involved a gag in which she would have dressed up as the Jenners’ elder half-sister, Kim Kardashian, which segued into the actress bashing the sex tape-star-turned-entrepreneur.
“I mean, how Kim Kardashian got famous from the sex tape and I just went to acting school and worked really hard ...” Wilson said.
The “Bridesmaids” alum ultimately presented the award for hip-hop video alone while wearing a controversial police stripper costume. She even twerked with winner Nicki Minaj when the rapper hit the stage.
