‘Vampire Diaries’ star Nina Dobrev: ‘I’m a relationship girl’
“The Vampire Diaries” stunner Nina Dobrev is on the September cover of Cosmopolitan, or as she calls it, her “Big Girl Cover.”
“My first ‘Big Girl Cover’...Im officially a woman now. Heres the video from my COSMOPOLITAN shoot in Woodstock, NY !” the actress wrote on her Who Say account.
Oh, darling. You’ll want to rethink that sentiment if Anna Wintour calls ...
The Bulgaria-born actress, who previously appeared on the Canadian teen drama “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” talked to the mag about love and her next projects. Dobrev, dubbed “strong, single and a badass heartbreaker,” appears on the hot-pink cover bending down to put on her shoe, in a skintight mini-dress.
Fresh off their May breakup, she and costar Ian Somerhalder had quite the awkward encounter during the “Vampire Diaries” panel at Comic-Con International last month.
Their “TVD” characters Damon and Elena finally get together in Season 4 — after years of “will they, won’t they” tension — meaning more steamy scenes to come for the exes. But when an audience member asked if there was anyone on the show who Dobrev, in character, had yet to make out with, a misfired joke from Somerhalder brought up some questions. “Me!” he replied, “Give me your number. I’ll set you up,” he said to the audience member.
AWK-ward.
But now that she’s single again, Dobrev has a lot to say about the opposite sex, giving few hints about what went down between her and her blue-eyed costar.
“You either have chemistry or you don’t, but a lot of what attracts me is a guy’s mind and humor and talent,” the 24-year-old said. “I need to get to know all those things before I fall for someone. I’m not a one-night-stand kind of girl. I’m a relationship girl.”
“I’m progressive in some ways, old-fashioned in others. I like it when guys hold the door open and are sweet and thoughtful,” she added. “The guys on our show are really good at that. A man in a suit looking put together and dapper is very attractive, but I also kind of like the I-just-rolled-out-of-bed, a-little-bit-of-scruff, effortless, not-trying-hard-but-still-sexy guy. If a guy spends more time looking in the mirror than I do, that’s a problem!”
Since the breakup, Dobrev has been spotted with BFF Julianne Hough, who also called it quits with longtime boyfriend Ryan Seacrest this year.
“It’s been cool to find an active buddy — there are lots of girlie girls around. We don’t talk about makeup; we talk about life,” Dobrev said.
But don’t go thinking that Dobrev and the “Dancing With the Stars” alum go and have pity parties over their broken hearts. Sorry guys, there probably aren’t any pillow fights either.
“That’s not what our friendship is about. Unfortunately, that’s how it’s perceived, but there’s more to us. People aren’t defined by their relationships. The whole point is being true to yourself and not losing yourself in relationships, whether romances or friendships.”
Dobrev and Somerhalder, and newly single costar Paul Wesley, will return this fall in Season 5 of the CW’s “The Vampire Diaries.” Dobrev is currently filming the comedy “Let’s Be Cops” with James D’Arcy, Damon Wayans Jr. and “New Girl’s” Jake Johnson.
As for her personal ventures, Dobrev is looking to get a bit more zen in her life.
“I want to open my own yoga studio. Planning construction and looking at properties is fun. I’m using a different part of my brain. You know that feeling when you use a different muscle? You’re excited to be exercising it but you get a little sore! Yoga changed my life. Hopefully, it will do that for others,” she said.
She also admitted that she sometimes puts a lot of pressure on herself to succeed.
“I can take a lot of pressure though,” she added. “I’m constantly trying to make myself better, to learn more. I didn’t finish college, so I feel like I’m always having to prove myself. I don’t want to feel like the smallest person in the room.”
The September issue hits newsstands Tuesday.
