Greg Louganis engaged to partner Johnny Chaillot
Greg Louganis had big news to announce Monday: He’s engaged to partner Johnny Chaillot, a paralegal.
The 53-year-old diving superstar, recently a coach on the celeb-diving competition “Splash,” plans to walk down the aisle this fall, he told People.
“This is what the universe had in store for both of us,” he said.
During his diving career, Louganis took five Olympic medals, the mag said, sweeping the 3-meter and 10-meter competitions in consecutive Games (1984 and ‘88). Add to that five world championships and almost 50 national titles.
He came out as gay and HIV positive in 1995 on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”
Louganis told Logo Online’s the Backlot in March that even though he and Chaillot had been together “coming up on a year,” he wasn’t interested in having kids.
“I don’t want to be an older parent. Even though my life is pretty active I know what it was like to have an older father. I’ll be the fun uncle. I think that’s good enough for me.”
He described his relationship with 52-year-old Chaillot to the Backlot like this: “When we first got together it was like, ‘We look like brothers.’ He has the same skin. The same skin tone, everything. I was like, ‘This feels really narcissistic.’ But I also realize the more I fall in love with him the more I fall in love with myself.
“I always grew up hearing, ‘Oh, your soul mate this and that.’ And I didn’t think it existed. I’m having second thoughts about that.”
Louganis also shared other news on Monday: He’s in the first class of inductees to the Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will happen Aug. 2 in Chicago.
