Miss Golden Globe 2015: 7 minutes with Greer Grammer
Think: 10 a.m. breakfast in bed, celebrating a two-year anniversary with her boyfriend in Carmel. Romantic, to say the least, and it was about to get better for Greer Grammer when informed she would be Miss Golden Globe 2015.
“I got the call and I screamed!” the 22-year-old MTV actress told the Los Angeles Times. “My boyfriend was, like, ‘What is that?’ and then he heard ‘Golden Globes’ and he knew it was something big.” So big in fact, that Grammer couldn’t reveal the news to anyone. Not even to her father or, heaven forbid, her mother.
The USC graduate’s parents are Kelsey Grammer of “Frasier” fame, who’s a three-time Golden Globe winner, and Hollywood makeup artist Barrie Buckner.
“If my mom would be at the grocery store and someone asked her ‘How’s Greer?’ she would say, ‘Oh, she’s great, she’s Miss Golden Globe!’”
The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. bestows the honor annually on a person with at least one celebrity parent. Though the title most often goes to a “Miss,” there have been a few Mr. Golden Globes as well. The announcement celebration each year kicks off the round of parties building up to the awards. Miss Golden Globe assists during the ceremony, which will be held Jan. 11 at the Beverly Hilton.
Grammer kept quiet for 10 days, waiting until the day of the announcement -- Thursday -- to slip the news to her parents: She would join a line of women including Melanie Griffith (1975), Laura Dern (1982) and Katherine Kramer (1990). Last year’s honoree was Sosie Bacon, daughter of Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon.
The “Awkward” actress learned about the gig from pal Haley Giraldo, daughter of Grammy-winner Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, who was Miss Golden Globe 2002. From there, Grammer paid special attention to Miss Golden Globe each year, dreaming that one day she’d hold that title.
It only helped that the Los Angeles native was a former beauty pageant contestant, emerging as Miss Teen Malibu in 2008 and 2009 and Miss Regional California Teen USA in 2011.
These days, she’s filming the fifth and final season of her MTV series but took time out Friday to chat about the lead-up to the 72nd Golden Globe Awards. We asked her to imagine she was getting ready for her big day. Spoiler: It involves hair, makeup and lots of Reese Witherspoon.
Would you wear your hair up or down?
I haven’t picked my dress yet. Mmm, up. I feel like up stays better.
Would you focus more on your eyes or lips?
Eyes. Something defined, something that brings them out and makes them look really good. Lots of lashes.
Would you do a French tip or solid color on your nails?
I love French tip. It’s just clean.
Would your gown be strapless, halter or keyhole?
Maybe keyhole. They’re super fun.
Would your dress’ color be super bright or more neutral?
A little more neutral. Maybe for the after-party I’d switch into something more colorful.
Three-inch heel or 5-inch heel?
This is tough because I love a 5-inch heel. I don’t wear anything less than a 5-inch. I love feeling tall. But it will be a long night, so possibly a 3-inch for the show.
Would your statement piece of jewelry be a necklace, bracelet or earrings?
Earrings. I love diamonds, as I think every girl does. I don’t know what kind color -- that depends on what dress I end up choosing. I love blue diamonds.
(Incidentally, for the post-announcement cocktail reception in West Hollywood, Grammer donned a Patricia Bonaldi dress, Armani shoes and clutch, a Haati Chai cuff and Erickson Beamon Rocks earrings.)
What perfume would you wear as you head out the door?
My boyfriend got me a pink Versace perfume. It’s my favorite. Roses and floral, and I love that.
What song would you listen to on your way to the red carpet?
This is going to be really cheesy -- like, really, really cheesy. I’m almost embarrassed I’m going to be saying this. It’s a tie between “Perfect Day” by Hoku, because I want to be Elle Woods [Reese Witherspoon’s character in “Legally Blonde”] at some time. There’s also the 2008 song by Jordin Sparks called “One Step at a Time.” I love that song for really big moments in life.
What would you munch on ahead of time?
Usually on award-show days or crazy days it’s so hard to figure out what to eat. My go-to is an Egg McMuffin. They’re fast and they’re so yummy. They’re McDonalds, so they’re not healthy-healthy, but they’re healthy. For snacks -- carrot sticks.
Who is your beauty icon?
Reese Witherspoon. I love her. Any question you ask me, the answer is going to be ‘Reese Witherspoon.’ Oh, and I love Grace Kelly.
So what would you do if you met Witherspoon, whose film “Wild” could have Golden Globe potential?
I’m praying for “Wild” to win. I don’t even know what I’d do if I meet her. I’d geek out. I would lose my mind. I’d probably just sit there and not have words. I’ve always wanted to be like Reese.
Who is your fashion icon?
Right now, it’s Taylor Swift. Everyone likes Taylor Swift. [I love her] street style -- the way she dresses. She’s very chic, classy and girly. I’m really girly too. I love her red lips.
And your role model in life?
Of course, Reese Witherspoon.
