Drew Barrymore plans to raise daughter Jewish, convert
Drew Barrymore plans to raise her daughter Olive as Jewish and probably will convert to the faith herself.
Appearing on ABC’s “The View” on Friday, Barrymore, 37, told the ladies that her daughter would be following the faith of her father, Will Kopelman.
The couple married at her Montecito estate last June and delivered their baby girl last September.
“He’s a nice Jewish man from a nice Jewish family,” Barrymore said giddily of her 35-year-old husband. “I’m a shiksa. I do the seders, and we do Passover.”
Barrymore, who is the daughter of American actors John Drew and Jaid Barrymore, made headlines when she said that she was planning to follow the faith for Kopelman. A shiksa, as she described herself, is Yiddish for a woman who isn’t Jewish.
“I haven’t converted yet,” she said in response to Joy Behar’s prodding. “Olive will be raised traditionally. And we had a very traditional wedding ceremony with Rabbi Rubenstein and I did the ketubah. We wore the yarmulkes and we were under the chuppah. I’m there. I love it.”
A ketubah is a Jewish marriage contract, a yarmulke is the traditional head covering worn by men and a chuppah is a ceremonial canopy the couple marries under.
“It’s a beautiful faith and I’m so honored to be around it. It’s so family-oriented and beautiful and I learned so much. The stories are so beautiful and it’s incredibly enlightening. I’m really happy. It’s amazing,” said the “Big Miracle” star.
Barrymore, a former face of Cover Girl, appeared on the show to talk about the launch of her new cosmetics line for Wal-Mart called Flower, which will hit stores at the end of the month.
“I think it could last, and my daughter could work on it someday,” the “E.T.” actress told the Associated Press. “I think I’ve earned the right to do it, after so many years working with Cover Girl, and I’ve been in a makeup chair since I was 6.”
“I don’t think much about clothes, but if you take away my concealer, I wouldn’t know what to do,” she added.
