Emmys 2013: ‘Modern Family’ wins best comedy series
For the fourth consecutive year, ABC’s hit “Modern Family” has won the Emmy for comedy series.
Structured as a mockumentary, the sitcom follows three generations of a diverse and affluent Southern California family, played by an ensemble cast that includes Sofia Vergara, Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen and Eric Stonestreet. Created by TV veterans Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, “Modern Family” returns to ABC for a fifth season on Wednesday.

The series has been a perennial favorite at the Emmys since its debut in 2009, earning a total of 45 nominations to date. In terms of consecutive wins, it now stands second only to “Frasier,” which took home the comedy Emmy five years in a row from 1994 to 1998.

“Modern Family” prevailed in an eclectic field of nominees that included “Veep” (HBO), “Louie” (FX), “30 Rock” (NBC), “Girls” (HBO) and “The Big Bang Theory” (CBS).
Hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards are being held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, and the show is airing live on CBS.
