Tony Awards 2014: ‘Gentleman’s Guide’ wins best musical
“A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder,” a macabre musical about a social climber who comically bumps off the members of an aristocratic family, took home the Tony for new musical on Sunday.
The new-musical category was regarded as one of the tightest of the season, with no obvious front-runner going into Sunday evening’s ceremony. Darko Tresnjak won a Tony earlier in the evening for directing the musical, and Linda Cho won a Tony for costume design for her work on the production.
“Gentleman’s” -- which features original songs by Steven Lutvak and Robert L. Freedman -- was previously seen at the Old Globe in San Diego and the Hartford Stage in Connecticut before transferring to the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York in the fall of 2013. The musical is based on the novel by Roy Horniman that served as the basis for the 1949 Alec Guinness movie “Kind Hearts and Coronets.”
The musical stars Jefferson Mays, who plays multiple roles -- both male and female -- as the various members of the aristocratic family who are murdered by the scheming interloper (Bryce Pinkham).
The other nominees in the best musical category were “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” “After Midnight” and “Aladdin.”

Last year’s winner was “Kinky Boots,” which is still running at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in New York.
