Alfonso Cuaron was inspired to make “Gravity” because of something his son and writing partner, Jonas Cuaron, said, the filmmaker revealed at the Golden Globes on Sunday night after receiving the best director award.

“My son said, ‘Your films are all right, but you’ve got to get more entertaining,” Cuaron said backstage at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. “It could be more fun. And that was the point of departure to do this film.”

The Mexican director took advantage of the evening to show off his sense of humor as well.

When prompted by a reporter to explain what really happened at the end of “Gravity,” Cuaron replied, “I thought the best ending would be Sandra [Bullock] was on the ground -- she gets up, she takes two steps, and something falls and crushes her, and it’s George Clooney,” he joked.

Earlier in the evening, during his acceptance speech, he thanked Bullock for sticking with the project even after she thought he said he was going to give her herpes. In his thick accent, he said from the stage, he was telling his leading lady he was going to get her an earpiece.

Is there a particular responsibility when it comes to being a Latino filmmaker?

“I don’t think there’s a rule for being a Latino or not being Latino,” he replied to a reporter’s query. “It’s just about cinema.”
