SAG Award winner Jeffrey Tambor reaches out to ‘people who are not Maura Pfefferman’

There’s no question that Amazon’s “Transparent” has Jeffrey Tambor playing his most transformative role as an actor. And, for Tambor, that’s a bit surreal considering he feels more connected to himself than ever before.

Tambor stars as seventysomething transgender woman Maura Pfefferman -- a role for which he’s earned a Golden Globe and an Emmy. And on Sunday, Tambor added a SAG Award -- his first ever -- to the bundle with a win for male actor in a comedy series.

“I would say, and it sounds a little glib, I think playing Maura, I get to access more of Jeffrey Tambor than I get to access when I’m playing Jeffrey Tambor,” he said. “I’m still learning.”

He added: “I’ve gotten letters from people telling me... how [Transparent] has helped them in their freedom and taking their authenticity and through some very, very hard times ... I want to especially reach out to the people who are not Maura Pfefferman and don’t shop in the mall, things like that, and people who are really scraping by to get their freedom and their medicine and hormone shots and surgeries. It’s not a red carpet thing; it’s a people thing.”
