Kevin Spacey says the Netflix original series “House of Cards” could have been “the dud heard around the world.”

But thanks to the creative freedom Netflix gave to its sprawling political drama, the show was a hit instead.

The show made television history in September when it took the Emmy for best drama, effectively launching the world of streaming-only TV into the stratosphere and igniting an original-programming race among a number of online companies including Amazon and Hulu.

That success, however, has not gone to Spacey’s head (even though he’s nominated for lead actor in a television drama).

“You don’t let those things affect you,” he said on the red carpet before Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards telecast. “It shows that where there’s an audience, the platform doesn’t matter anymore. They want stories, they’re dying for stories. No wonder so many contenders are jumping into the fray. If you wanna compete, you’ve got to get into the original content game.”

As for what fans can expect from Season 2, Spacey is keeping mum.

“All I know is that Netflix is being very romantic by dropping it on Valentine’s Day,” he said.
