Gold Standard: Too many December movies: AFI delays awards announcement
The late theatrical arrival of several key movies has prompted the American Film Institute to delay its annual award announcement.
The Institute will now release its list of 10 best films and TV shows on Dec. 16. The announcement had originally been scheduled for Dec. 7.
The rain check will give jurors additional time to see and consider such Christmas Day releases as Quentin Tarantino’s western “The Hateful Eight,” Alejandro G. Inarritu’s revenge tale “The Revenant” and David O. Russell’s latest collaboration with Jennifer Lawrence, “Joy.”

Two other December movies — the Will Smith whistler-blower story “Concussion” and “The Big Short,” which chronicles the 2008 mortgage-debt meltdown and the oddballs who bet against Wall Street — premiered last week at AFI Fest.
There’s also a little movie called “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which opens Dec. 18. The film will have its world premiere in Los Angeles on Dec. 14 and potentially could screen even earlier for AFI jurors, though Disney has yet to release details about the premiere or additional press screenings.
AFI’s celebratory luncheon date remains Jan. 8 in Los Angeles.
