Oscars 2013 red carpet: Shades of pale

This is like an Oscars flashback with all the Armani, Harry Winston and Veronica Lake waves on the red carpet Sunday.

Then, there was a Sharon Stone-Gap turtleneck moment, when Helen Hunt revealed she’s wearing a navy blue dress from cheap chic retailer H&M. Shocker!

Back to Armani, though. He should get his due. After all, he practically invented the red carpet designer derby, when he started dressing Jodie Foster in the 1990s. Sunday, he’s done a wonderful job with Jessica Chastain, with Naomi Watts’ silvery sequin gown, and with 9-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis’ dress, a navy blue, puff-sleeve Armani Junior creation with a back bow detail and matching wrap. The young actress is wearing a sparkly headband and carrying a puppy purse. That puppy purse may just be the next big fashion trend.

Armani is known for a certain kind of glamour. But in terms of trends, Sunday’s red carpet is all about shades of pale.

Some of the pale gowns we’re seeing are of the cream-puff variety, namely Amy Adams’ pale blue frayed organza Oscar de la Renta, Octavia Spencer’s blush tulle one-shoulder Tadashi Shoji creation and Jennifer Lawrence’s strapless pale pink Dior couture trumpet gown (the necklace on the back is an interesting twist).

In the more sleek category is Amanda Seyfried’s pale gray lace Alexander McQueen halter dress (a little dull if you ask me), and Charlize Theron’s sculptural white silk bustier Dior gown.

Although a press release went out early saying that Anne Hathaway would wear Valentino, she’s actually wearing an icy pink backless Prada gown. She looks like a modern day Audrey Hepburn except for what could be construed as a wardrobe malfunction in the nipple area. I’m sure we’ll all be talking about that Monday.

By far my favorite fashion statement of the night so far is Zoe Saldana’s belted, silvery gray gown by little-known French designer Alexis Mabille. It’s classically beautiful, but with lots of surprises, including ruffles on top and asymmetrical tiers on the bottom. It’s nice to see a new designer name in the mix, too.
