Fox won Wednesday night in total viewership and among key 18-to-49-year-olds, though its “American Idol” was flat with last week’s numbers, according to preliminary data from Nielsen.

The aged singing contest drew 10.5 million viewers overall and a rating of 2.7 in the 18-to-49 demographic, on par with last week’s episode. In the 18-49 demo, a ratings point equals about 1.3 million people watching.

CBS came in second place with an average of 10.1 million viewers and a rating of 2.2. The veteran reality program “Survivor” was flat with last week at a 2.4 rating, but its total audience increased to 9.6 million, bringing it within 1 million viewers of “Idol” for the first time ever.

“Criminal Minds” was strong at 9 p.m. with an audience of 11.4 million, making it Wednesday’s most-watched show. Its 18-49 rating grew 18% to a 2.6, compared with last week’s special airing at 10 p.m. “CSI” returned after a week off with a 1.7 rating, down 15% from its last new episode.

ABC’s comedy lineup generally improved after hitting season lows last week. “The Middle” and “Suburgatory” posted double-digit percentage gains, while “Modern Family” rose slightly to a 3.3, again beating every other telecast in the 18-49 demo.

“Mixology” lost just 6% of its 18-to-49-year-old viewership compared with its premiere last week, though its 1.6 rating is still less than stellar for a show with “Modern Family” as a lead-in. “Nashville” gained 8% for a 1.4.

On NBC, “Revolution” came in flat with last week’s 1.3 rating, while “Law & Order: SVU” and the spinoff drama “Chicago P.D.” fell after spiking last week with crossover episodes.

CW’s series struggled Wednesday as “Arrow” and “Tomorrow People” both fell about 20% in 18-49 to a 0.7 and a 0.4, respectively.
