Movie ticket prices rise, propelled by 3-D and Imax films

Movie ticket prices increased sharply in the second quarter of 2013, thanks to a slate of 3-D and Imax films.

The average U.S. movie ticket price for the three months that ended in June was $8.38, up 3.2% from the same period last year, according to the National Assn. of Theatre Owners, an industry group. The average price increased 5.5% from $7.94 in the first quarter.

The jump was driven by the popularity of higher-priced 3-D and Imax films, including “Star Trek Into Darkness” and “Iron Man 3.”

Patrick Corcoran, a spokesman for the association, said theaters’ revenue from 3-D movies in the quarter was $1.29 billion, up 73% from a year earlier.

If $8.38 seems relatively cheap to Los Angeles moviegoers, that’s because the association’s figures are based on data from across the country and include lower-priced matinee and children’s tickets.
