‘Lincoln,’ ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ boosted by Oscar nominations
Thursday’s Academy Award nominations energized the box office of “Lincoln” and “Silver Linings Playbook.”
After receiving 12 nods, including one for best picture, director Steven Spielberg’s big-screen portrayal of the 16th U.S. president generated 17% more at the box office than the weekend before. With $6.3 million, according to an estimate from distributor Walt Disney Studios, its domestic total is now a fantastic $152.6 million.
“Lincoln” was financed by DreamWorks Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Participant Media and Dune Entertainment.
After taking home eight nominations, including best picture, “Silver Linings Playbook” got a 38% box office bump to $5 million. Its total gross is now a healthy $41.3 million and the movie has yet to play nation-wide.
The Weinstein Co. plans to expand the comedy, which stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, to theaters around the country next weekend.
Both “Lincoln” and “Silver Linings” increased the number of theaters they were playing in this weekend, but not by enough to explain their increased ticket sales.
Also benefiting on a more modest scale was best picture nominee “Amour.” Sony Pictures Classics expanded the European import from three to 15 theaters and more than tripled its box office take to $270,600.
